Out of my comfort zone in a small city called Herning

This is my journey - how I came to Herning, made new friends and settled in.

I arrived to Herning in the end of August and it was one of the hardest, yet most exciting thing I have ever done in my life. I had to say good bye to all of my friends and family and move to another country, 1000 kilometers away from home.

I come from Tallinn, the capital of Estonia and I have to say that Herning is totally different from my hometown. It is a lot smaller and there is not so many people in here, which made it scary for me as I am the city girl. At the same time, it was good because Herning is small enough to meet new people and explore the city.

What am I doing here? I started studying branding and marketing management in design and business school TEKO. My every day life mainly is around Birk and of course in the centre. When I am not engaged with my studies, you can probably find me hanging out with my friends, working out, shopping or exploring museums.

So how did I manage to settle in? On the first day I took a trip around the town, went shopping and ate chinese food with my mother. Then I said good bye to her and the journey really began. Luckily I already had some friends here and living in dormitory didn’t hurt either.

Estonian girls, who I knew before, made settling in much easier and quickly we made new friends from different countries. People from Denmark, Rumenia, Bulgaria, Latvia, Poland and so on and so on. At the beginning it was really easy to find things to do.

We went to the Heart museum, saw a football game, took part in different events meant for internationals and well, drank beer with other internationals. There were a lot of local people, who helped us to feel welcome.

After living here more than three months I know that I did the right decision moving here. It was hard at first. Literally, there were are lot of tears, but now I feel like home and I am excited to see what happens next.

Soon the christmas holiday begins and I am flying back to Estonia, but I know already, that I will miss all those people here and be happy to come back.

In the next posts I will tell you more about where I have been and what places I have seen here. I will tell you about my experience in TEKO, the places I have seen in Denmark and all the weird things I as a foreigner have to get used to. But in the mean time - Glædelig jul og godt nytår!!
